Florida LambdaRail Bi-Annual Report 2013-2014
HELPING OUR AFFILIATES ACHIEVE SUCCESS
FLR is proud to be the preferred network services provider for dozens of Florida’s most forward-looking government agencies, non-profit research centers, universities and schools. Their stories illustrate the many ways FLR is providing value for diverse communities.
BARRY UNIVERSITY
“Barry University has been in the forefront
of delivering academic instruction using synchronous point-to-point systems for
various programs, including its Physician
Assistant program for many years. This
delivery of instruction is possible because of
the high reliability of the Internet 2 connectivity Barry University is provided through its relationship with FLR. Today students receive instruction
BAY DISTRICT SCHOOLS
“Most people would not realize that
school system bandwidth requirements
are increasing exponentially. Virtually everything we have to deliver now is
very graphic intensive and it starts with
the very early school grades. Florida DOE testing requirements are adding a huge load to network traffic needs every month as well. To address these needs, we have tried to be very proactive at Bay District Schools by building out our own dark fiber plant over the past decade.
Adding network services through FLR brings Bay County Schools to the next level by providing increased bandwidth while reducing our costs due to the billing algorithms favoring instructional traffic to qualifying institutions.
It certainly reduces our latency when trying to reach colleges and universities for material and research.
from one of 3 locations, Miami Shores, Saint Petersburg and the island of Saint Croix, all at the same time, live. FLR’s access to Internet 2 connectivity is very important in helping us
achieve our academic mission while greatly minimizing the impact of geographical barriers.”
- HERNAN LONDONO, BARRY UNIVERISTY
Having access to FLR helps our students embrace educational content that we
just do not have locally. MIT published
virtually all of their high tech classes online for free, as do a growing number of other
universities. With so many courses delivered through the Internet, every student who has a question or desire to learn can find content to meet their needs. Florida LambdaRail makes it possible for them to reach it. With FLR services we can deliver more in-depth science, biology, engineering and other classes with real time video rather than static pages or photographs. It used to be said that a picture was worth a thousand words. I submit that a short video
in these STEM areas may well be worth ten thousand words!”
