Join Your Colleagues at the 2024 FLR Annual Meeting – May 7, 8, 9

FLR is hosting three days of meetings beginning the afternoon of Tuesday, May 7, 2024, with our annual member meeting to be held at Nova Southeastern University.  All FLR members and affiliates are encouraged to attend an afternoon of informative presentations.

On Wednesday, May 8, and Thursday, May 9th, meetings will continue at FIU’s Wolfe University Center at the Biscayne Bay Campus.  Wednesday’s all-day session will include breakouts for the Sunshine State Education and Research Computing Alliance (SSERCA), FLR’s Engineering all-hands group, and other research and computing breakout groups.

Activities conclude on Thursday, May 9 with several research enablement workshops.

Registration is now open for the Florida LambdaRail Annual Member Meeting and associated breakout sessions. Read below for an overview of the three days of meetings and review the attachment for detailed information. CIOs, IT leadership, network engineers, researchers, and research computing leaders are invited and encouraged to attend any or all three days. A final agenda will be available on-site at check-in.

Day One – FLR Annual Meeting
Tuesday, May 7, 1 pm to 6pm, Nova Southeastern University, Fort Lauderdale

Attendance is encouraged for all CIOs and technology leads. Presenters include:
• CISA, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency
• FLR Engineering
• NOAA, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency
• AOML, Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory
• GIBR, Gateway Institute for Brain Research
• Healthcare/Health Education Broadband Cost Reimbursement opportunity:
Healthcare Organizations with Hospitals and Higher Education Affiliates offering health education programs (e.g. nursing, etc.) are encouraged to join our planned breakout information session. Learn about broadband cost reimbursement through the USAC Rural Health Care Connect Program and how
your FLR membership enables you to take advantage of this unique-in-Florida opportunity (though termed “rural”, participants do not themselves need to be rurally based). Successful applicants can see up to a 65% reimbursement of costs.

The Day One annual meeting will be in person only.

Days Two and Three consist of targeted meetings that may be of interest to you and members of your team. Attendees wishing to sign up for open office hours, will be able to do so onsite during check-in.

Day 2 – Research and Technical Meetings
Wednesday, May 8, 2024, FIU Biscayne Bay Campus, Wolfe University Center

• The Sunshine State Research and Education Computing Alliance (SSERCA) will hold an all day, all-hands meeting. Open to anyone interested in participating in SSERCA or learning more about HPC resources and how they may be utilized both inside and outside of higher education.
• FLR Technical All-Hands. Led by Chris Griffin, FLR Chief Network Architect. Open to all FLR participants.
• NSF-led workshops on Cyberinfrastructure Planning and Grant Writing including opportunities to meet individually with key NSF personnel Kevin Thompson and Dr. Amy Apon.
• Kevin Thompson, NSF CC* program director open office hours
• Regional Research Computing Workshop (University of Miami led planning grant)

Day 3 – Research Enablement and CC* Workshops
Thursday, May 9, 2024, FIU Biscayne Bay Campus, Wolfe University Center

• Workshop 1: Continuation of UM Regional Research Computing Workshop from May 8
• Workshop 2: Southeast RENs support for Cyberinfrastructure and Research to HBCUs, MSIs and under-resourced institutions (non R1s). Presenters include Chris Griffin (FLR), Cas DeAngelo (Southern Crossroads)
• Research Computing Panel
• Kevin Thompson, NSF CC* program director open office hours

In-person attendance is encouraged for these events, but remote attendance will be available for all Wednesday and Thursday sessions.
